First published in 1903, _Principles of Mathematics_ was Bertrand Russell’s first major work in print. It was this title which saw him begin his ascent towards eminence. In this groundbreaking and important work, Bertrand Russell argues that mathematics and logic are, in fact, identical and what is commonly called mathematics is simply later deductions from logical premises. Highly influential and engaging, this important work led to Russell’s dominance of analytical logic on western philosophy in the twentieth century.

The aim of this paper is to question the objectivist conception of photography by confronting it with the history – and epistemology – of the painted image. I suggest that the idea of photography as an objective testimony seems to rest upon a phenomenon already described by ancient rhetoric – enargeia, which Cicero latinized into evidentia. Thus the question is raised whether the objectivity of the photographic image is not the mere continuation of an old rhetorical and pictorial tradition about (...) the epistemic-rhetoric evidentia of testimony. Moreover, through the detailed analysis of two paintings by Jan Van Eyck – The Arnolfini Portrait and Léal Souvenir –, I argue that what guarantees an image’s objectivity to the point of its being accepted as evidence ultimately is not the non-subjective mechanical process or the automatic indexical device used to make the photographic image but the image’s built-in pledge of faithfulness which was at the heart of painters’ thoughts long before the invention of photography. First published in 1954, _Human Society in Ethics and Politics_ is Bertrand Russell’s last full account of his ethical and political positions relating to both politics and religion. Ethics, he argues, are necessary to man because of the conflict between intelligence and impulse – if one were without the other, there would be no place for ethics. Man’s impulses and desires are equally social and solitary. On amalgame souvent, sous le terme d' « échange », le sauvage du contrat social avec celui du marché. Il s'agit ici a contrario de les distinguer en montrant comment ces deux personnages répondent en réalité à deux modes d'argumentation tout à fait différents que les Lumières ont contraints à coexister selon des modalités très diverses. Or le syntagme moderne de« société civile» n'ajamais résorbé cette ambiguïté et nous trouvons là matière à bien des enseignements car cela permet de réfléchir (...) à la fois sur ce qu'est un« concept», une« historicité » et un « citoyen ». Méthodologie, anthropologie et politique apparaissent ainsi comme les trois horizons d'une analyse qui ne veut nullement réduire l'équivoque, mais bien plutôt en mesurer les richesses. (shrink)

[Knowledge by Acquaintance and Knowledge by Description].

The large-scale painting ›People’s Justice‹, a work by the artist collective Taring Padi, originally intended as an agit-prop artwork in Indonesia two decades ago, was publicly exhibited in Kassel in 2022 at the international art exhibition ›documenta fifteen‹. Public criticism declared the large-scale image to be an anti-Semitic machination and scandalized the art exhibition as a whole as marked by anti-Semitic activism. Taring Padi’s large-scale painting was first covered, then completely removed. – In our paper, we analyze the political problematic (...) that set the matrix for the scandal and the organizational ethical aporia of a diffusion of responsibility: the organization of the art exhibition sought to maximize the curatorial freedom of the artist collectives, but in doing so increased the risk of dramatic reputational damage. Then we develop the specifically aesthetic problematic that the novel genre of ›post-autonomous art‹, so characteristic of ›documenta fifteen‹, makes particularly high demands on the ability to reflect on the difference between art and politics, as well as on cultural identities and differences, when post-autonomous art operates in multicultural contexts. These high demands affect not only the artists and curators, but also the real and virtual audiences of an open multicultural art exhibition. We identify some reasons why the high demands were not well met in the staging of ›documenta fifteen‹. Then we develop some suggestions within the normative framework of discourse ethics that reveal the deep normative aporias of such exhibitions and their difficult discourse culture and can be prospectively helpful. Finally, we briefly summarize the characteristic difficulties and aporias we have elaborated and end with an outlook on Aline Caillet’s art-philosophical concept of a specifically aesthetic responsibility. The five of us research and teach risk analysis with an eye towards decision support. Our work has been dedicated to taming risks and helping to make challenging decisions. But nothing had prepared us for the Covid-19 pandemic. We first had to grapple with the news coming from abroad, including, for some of us, our home countries. Then, some information and research, but mostly opinions, started coming in from our academic community, and we felt the tensions. Finally, the UK went (...) into an unofficial and then official lockdown, and all University staff were asked to redirect their research capacity so as to support the national effort for risk analysis and decision support. As we write this on the 20th of April, many countries, including the UK, are starting to consider how to get out of lockdown. Like the previous stages of the pandemic, there is little data, perhaps a bit more research, surely many more opinions, and definitely an overwhelming amount of personal experiences and thoughts. Here we reflect on all of the above, just in case it can help the readers of this Minds in Society flash editorial to think and act, or at least, to not have to do so entirely on their own. As it can be expected, our collage introduces more questions than it can answer. (shrink)
